BALD EAGLE TO BE SET FREE AFTER HEALING FROM GUNSHOT WOUNDS

A Bald Eagle was found October 16, 2004 by Mr. & Mrs. John Walls and their family on their Mercer County farm in Speedway, WV. He was quite weak and was suffering from gunshot injuries to his body and right wing. His left wing was also badly broken from falling out of the sky. TRAC Executive Director Wendy Perrone picked the bird up from the Walls family and with the assistance of volunteer and neighbor Marko Jorden, administered emergency treatment and got him stabilized. Marko had named him Comanche by the end of the initial intake procedures as a tribute to the eagle’s spirit.

Bear Archery Hunters Set New Bow Harvest Record

West Virginia bear archery hunters set a new record during the 2001 bear archery season, according to Curtis Taylor, Chief of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Section. Archery hunters took 463 bears during the bow season, and this surpasses the previous record harvest of 424 that was established in 1999.

Beech Fork State Park will host "America Through The Years: Let Freedom Ring" July 4, 2002. This event, the only of its kind in West Virginia State Parks, is a celebration of patriotism and a salute to our Nation's heritage. The program and associated displays will give the audience an opportunity to focus on the ever-changing face of the United States of America.

Berwind Lake WMA Public Meeting June 24

Another public meeting to discuss management issues at Berwind Lake Wildlife Management Area will be held Tuesday, June 24, at the War TEAM Center beginning at 6:00 p.m., according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Bluestone WMA Developed Recreation Areas Closed During Flood Recovery

All camping and other developed recreational opportunities have been discontinued at Bluestone Wildlife Management Area near Indian Mills in Summers County until flood damage can be repaired, according to Bluestone WMA Superintendent Robert Sovine. All seven camping areas, including 330 camping sites and all bathhouse facilities, will be closed while about three feet of mud caused by recent flooding is removed. Sovine estimates the effort will take about four weeks to complete before the recreational area can be reopened to the public.

Please call the Wildlife Management Area superintendent's office at (304) 466-3398 for the most up-to-date information on the status of facility cleanup and road accessibility.

I thought I would introduce you to small town life in West Virginia.

Since Buckhannon is situated in Upshur County, I will familiarize you with Upshur County, as well. Buckhannon's population rests near 7,000, while the county's population totals 23,000. Our average temperature is 52� Fahrenheit, with a January average high of 41� F and average low of 20� F, and an August average high of 84� F, and average low of 59� F. We average nearly 50 inches of rainfall a year, too. The county is 354.86 square miles in size, or 225,288 acres, and the courthouse rests 1432 feet above sea level.
