Cooper's Rock Mountain Lion Sanctuary: Volunteer Day

Cooper's Rock Mountain Lion Sanctuary announces its next Volunteer Day will be July 13, 2002.

The sanctuary is located in Bruceton Mills, WV. If you'd like to come and help out, call Mark Jenkins at (304) 379-8908.

CRMLS is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving a permanent home to displaced captive mountain lions. We're licensed by WV DNR and the USDA. We're accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries. We receive no money from the state, and we do depend on charitable contributions to survive. More at http://www.cougarsanctuary.org and recent news at http://web.mountain.net/~cindyjo

Volunteer Days are held at CRMLS 3-4 times per year in order to publicize our cause, educate people about the tragedy that sometimes meets captive mountain lions kept as "pets", and to invite friends of the sanctuary to come out and see the mountain lions. There's usually a lot of work to do as well, and we're continuously grateful for the people who come out and help with the big projects for which we need many hands.

Since we last posted to All WV, we have constructed a new enclosure in the woods. We had a Volunteer Day in April that attracted 70 people, including a Boy Scout Troop from Virginia and several long time sanctuary friends from Pittsburgh as well as folks in the surrounding communities.

The big project right now is putting a metal net covering over a 50'X50' all natural enclosure for a mountain lion that still has all his claws. Our policy is not to declaw mountain lions that come to us with their feet intact. Finding a way to keep a clawed mountain lion safety and securely enclosed in a large enclosure that has trees in it was a daunting task, and the work to complete the project is on-going. We're expecting that the next Volunteer Day will largely be devoted to that project. If you can come out and help (and have some fun too) we'd appreciate it! Call Mark Jenkins at (304) 379-8908.
