Division of Natural Resources Announces Cancellation of 2003 Blennerhassett Island State Park Hunt

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Section has decided not to have another controlled deer hunt on Blennerhassett Island State Park in 2003.

Hunters were very successful in reducing the deer population on the Island to manageable levels where impacts on vegetation will be minimal and the danger of disease significantly reduced. Several deer remain on the Island for the enjoyment of park visitors but they are no longer at a high population level.

Although the deer population was efficiently and significantly reduced through the controlled hunt, wildlife biologists fully expect that deer numbers will continue to increase through both natural reproduction and immigration from mainland West Virginia and Ohio. Annual deer counts will continue and at some point in the future, deer population growth will necessitate another controlled hunt on Blennerhassett Island State Park.
