Fall Hawk Migration at Moncove Lake State Park September 17-19

Birding

Witness the annual fall migration of many species of birds of prey as they travel
along the eastern flyway that passes through Monroe County. This migration typically
begins in early September and runs through October; however, late September usually
brings the most sightings. Birds seen last year include bald eagle, golden eagle,
osprey, peregrine falcon, northern harrier, goshawk, most eastern species of hawks,
other migrating songbirds and the first ever sighting in West Virginia of a
gyrfalcon. More than 5,000 hawks were counted in all for the 2,000 season, more than
3,500 of which were seen in September.

During September 17-19, meet at Moncove Lake State Park, in Gap Mills, WV, for a
daily car caravan tour to Hanging Rock Hawk Tower on Peter's Mountain, one of the
better hawk watching locations in the east. Tours will leave 8 a.m. each morning. A
drive of approximately 10 miles to the trail head and a walk of one mile of moderate
hiking is involved to get to the tower.

For more information on the guided trips or for camping information, please call
