Largemouth Bass Tagged in Plum Orchard Lake

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources fishery biologists have tagged more than 200 largemouth bass in Plum Orchard Lake in Fayette County, according to Bret Preston, Assistant Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section.

The orange-colored tags are inserted at the base of the fish's dorsal fin. Each tag is uniquely numbered and has the DNR address printed on it. Anglers are asked to clip the tag at the insertion point into the fish and provide the DNR either the tag or tag number, the date the fish was caught, and if the fish was harvested or released. Information can be mailed to the DNR at 2311 Ohio Ave, Parkersburg, WV 26101, e-mailed to fishtags@dnr.state.wv.us, or by calling 304-256-6947. A reward is provided for returned tags.

Tag return information will enable the DNR to determine catch rates of largemouth bass in Plum Orchard Lake. This information will be useful in the management of largemouth bass in Plum Orchard Lake, and in other similar lakes. Funds for this study are provided from the Federal Aid for Sport Fish Restoration and West Virginia license revenues.
