Pet First Aid & Safety Class

Our pets enrich our lives in more ways than we can count. In turn, they depend on us for their safety and well-being. Pet safety awareness has increased nationally since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It was during this tragedy that our canine friends stood out. Canine search and rescue teams as well as canine law enforcement units all went above and beyond the call of duty. Conditions during the disaster were less than humane. Many of the animals suffered from physical exhaustion, mental exhaustion, cuts, and bruises from the debris. Volunteers with medical training were asked to assist with the animals. Would you know what to do if you were faced with an emergency situation involving your pet? How would you react?

The Upshur / Randolph Service Delivery Unit of the American Red Cross is proud to be the first and only American Red Cross unit in West Virginia to offer the new Pet First Aid & Safety Class. This four-hour course will prepare pet owners for emergencies involving their pets. We will teach and demonstrate proper splinting, restraint, and bandaging techniques, as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). We will examine the contents of a proper pet first aid kit and discuss what to do should a major disaster strike in your area. The cost of this course will be $25.00. At the conclusion of the course, participants will receive a certification card and the Pet First Aid & Safety manual.
