Cabell County Targeted as Area with High Number of Uninsured Children

CHARLESTON, W.Va.--Gov. Bob Wise continued his walking tour this morning going door to door in several neighborhoods in Huntington promoting the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Wise walked on 9th Avenue from 16th Street to 20th Street with more than 25 volunteers to encourage families to enroll in the program, which provides health care for children of families who make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to afford insurance coverage.

“We know from The Children’s Report done by the WVU Institute for Health Policy and Research that more than 28,300 children are uninsured in West Virginia on any given day,” Wise said. “We also know from the report that even though there are 771 children from Cabell County enrolled in the program there are still more than 1,000 uninsured children in this county.”

Wise said that while West Virginia still has too many uninsured children, during the past year an additional 10,000 children were signed up for the program. Currently there are more than 20,097 children enrolled in the CHIP program.

Wise has continued his annual walking tours this year in Monongalia County and Cabell County. Wise is scheduled to walk in neighborhoods in Wood County later this month.
