WVDNR Fishery Biologists to Conduct Fisheries Surveys On Many Lakes and Rivers
Posted by: Allen Canfield on Mon, 02 June 2003 03:12:14 (1256 Reads)West Virginia Division of Natural Resources fisheries biologists will be conducting surveys on many of the state's reservoirs, lakes, and rivers this spring. According to Bret Preston, Assistant Chief of Warmwater Fisheries, DNR biologists will be using electrofishing boats to collect largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass from the state's reservoirs and lakes to evaluate the size and condition of black bass, as well as the age structure. Individual fish will be measured and weighed and released back into the waters.
In addition, WVDNR biologists will be conducting surveys on the Ohio, Kanawha, and Monongahela rivers for sauger, walleye, and hybrid striped bass. These activities are a continued effort to better understand the state's large rivers fisheries. Surveys in the South Branch of the Potomac River and the Greenbrier River also will be conducted this spring to assess the health of smallmouth bass populations.Information collected in these intensive statewide studies will provide DNR biologists with an in-depth understanding of fish populations and aid in future management of these important fisheries. Periodically updates of study results will be available from DNR district offices and the WVDNR web site at www.dnr.state.wv.us . Funds for these studies are provided from the Federal Aid for Sport Fish Restoration and West Virginia license revenues.
