The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the West Virginia State Wildlife Center on June 20, 2003.

"The Wildlife Center, formerly known as the French Creek Game Farm, is an intricate part of the state's wildlife conservation and education program," according to Rob Silvester, Wildlife Center Biologist. Located in Upshur County, the Wildlife Center was established in 1923 as a wildlife refuge to aid in the reestablishment of wildlife populations in the state. Its value as a tourist attraction was quickly realized as many visitors came to the Wildlife Center in its first years of operation. Since that time, more than four million visitors have walked the interpretative trail, exploring their natural world and learning more about the state's wildlife resources.

The celebration starts at 9:00 a.m. on June 20, 2003 with a free admission day. Free refreshments will be served starting at 10:00 a.m. and the first 500 visitors will receive celebration souvenir items at the admission booth. Children under the age of 12 can fish at the trout pond from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Wildlife Resources Section staff will furnish rods, reels, tackle and bait for the event. "Visiting the Wildlife Center has been a long standing tradition for many people. This event is the Wildlife Resources Section's way of saying 'thank you for your continued support,'" added Silvester.

For more information about this event, contact the West Virginia State Wildlife Center at P.O. Box 38, French Creek, WV 26218, phone: (304) 924-6211 or visit the DNR's web page at www.dnr.state.wv.us.
