Fall Hawk Migration at Moncove Lake State Park September 17-19

along the eastern flyway that passes through Monroe County. This migration typically
begins in early September and runs through October; however, late September usually
brings the most sightings. Birds seen last year include bald eagle, golden eagle,
osprey, peregrine falcon, northern harrier, goshawk, most eastern species of hawks,
other migrating songbirds and the first ever sighting in West Virginia of a
gyrfalcon. More than 5,000 hawks were counted in all for the 2,000 season, more than
3,500 of which were seen in September.
