Safety Stressed by DNR Law Enforcement During Spring Turkey Season April 28 - May 24

As the 2003 statewide spring gobbler season opens April 28, thousands of hunters will begin their annual quest for West Virginia's most celebrated game bird, the spring gobbler. Hunters will find themselves getting up at unusually early hours to beat their prey out of bed. They will spend even more time covering themselves with the most advanced camouflage on the market, and spending more money buying various mouth calls, slate calls, and handmade box calls. Some hunters have been known to listen to tapes of themselves in an attempt to master the perfect call. But even with all this preparation, hunters must remember the most important factor of all: SAFETY. Even the best equipment, when used with the wrong hunting techniques, often can lead to a disappointing or possibly dangerous hunting experience.

2002 Big Buck Contest Winners

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has announced the winners of the 2002 West Virginia Big Buck Contest, according to Gene Thorn, Chairman of the WV Big Buck Contest Review Committee. The contest is cosponsored by the Division of Natural Resources, the Izaak Walton League of West Virginia, and the West Virginia Bowhunter's Association to recognize sportsmen who bagged extraordinarily big antlered bucks in West Virginia.

Pipestem Resort State Park Prepares for Medical Emergencies

Pipestem Resort State Park in Summers County, WV, became the first West Virginia state park to place an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) into service with the completion of a training program for park employees in February, according to Pipestem State Park Superintendent Steve Bolar. It also is one of the first major tourist destinations in the state to have this equipment and training.

Bluestone WMA Developed Recreation Areas Closed During Flood Recovery

All camping and other developed recreational opportunities have been discontinued at Bluestone Wildlife Management Area near Indian Mills in Summers County until flood damage can be repaired, according to Bluestone WMA Superintendent Robert Sovine. All seven camping areas, including 330 camping sites and all bathhouse facilities, will be closed while about three feet of mud caused by recent flooding is removed. Sovine estimates the effort will take about four weeks to complete before the recreational area can be reopened to the public.

Division of Natural Resources Announces Dates For Sectional Meetings

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will hold 17 public meetings in March to give hunters, anglers, trappers, landowners and other interested parties a voice in establishing 2003 deer, bear, turkey, and boar hunting regulations as well as 2004-2005 general hunting and trapping regulations and 2004 fishing regulations. The meetings will be held from March 17 through March 20, and each meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Effective January 2, 2003, the Division of Natural Resources' lifetime hunting and fishing license will take on a new look. The new license, on a credit card quality stock, is an improvement over the current paper version, significantly increasing its durability and appearance.

Winter Wonder Weekends At North Bend State Park

Start the new year off with a Winter Wonder Weekend at North Bend State Park near Cairo, West Virginia. The fun is scheduled for two weekends, January 17-19 and January 24-26. Both weekends include nature hunts, hikes, games, contests, and a "Stars-n-Stripes" party. The outdoor winter sports include sleigh rides, a snowman building contest and other old time activities (weather permitting). Please bring a costume for the "Stars-n-Stripes" party Saturday evening.
