Conservation Officers Arrest 21 in Nicholas County Cock Fighting Raid

On Sunday, January 25, 2004, Conservation Officers C. W. Young and T. L. White, along with Nicholas County Deputy Sheriff W. K. Shafer, raided an illegal cock fight on Route 82 near Birch River, West Virginia. During the course of the investigation 21 persons were cited for participating in an illegal cock fight and more arrests are pending.

WVDNR Seeks Information on Barn Owls

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is interested in determining the status of barn owls in the state, according to Kieran O’Malley, wildlife biologist with DNR’s Wildlife Resources Section. Although barn owls are declining in the eastern United States, WVDNR biologists located six new breeding sites in the eastern panhandle during 2001-2002. “These new nesting sites have been very productive and we are interested in determining where all the young owls are going,” said O’Malley.

"Although many areas received inclement weather, there was a total of 608 miles hiked in 13 parks, forests, wildlife management areas or rail trails," said Activities Coordinator Michelle Bragg.
