Conservation Officers Arrest 21 in Nicholas County Cock Fighting Raid

On Sunday, January 25, 2004, Conservation Officers C. W. Young and T. L. White, along with Nicholas County Deputy Sheriff W. K. Shafer, raided an illegal cock fight on Route 82 near Birch River, West Virginia. During the course of the investigation 21 persons were cited for participating in an illegal cock fight and more arrests are pending.

"Fastest Man With a Gun," Bob Munden, to Perform at National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration

The fastest man with a gun who ever lived is coming to town. Bob Munden, who has held all 18 world records in speed shooting since 1960, will perform at the 2003 National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration September 27 and 28 at Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park near Weston in Lewis County.

West Virginia State Wildlife Center Enjoys A Successful 80th Anniversary Celebration

Well over 800 visitors took part in the West Virginia State Wildlife Center’s 80th Anniversary celebration, held on June 20, 2003, according to Rob Silvester, Wildlife Center Biologist. The event included a free admission day and refreshments for visitors, a kids’ fishing derby at the trout pond and a reception for current and former employees of the Wildlife Center. “Everyone had a wonderful time. One of the most memorable experiences was listening to the stories and tales of former employees who worked at the Center,” said Silvester.

Largemouth Bass Tagged in Plum Orchard Lake

Don't Take Fawns from the Wild

Late May through early June is the peak of white-tailed deer fawning in West Virginia. Throughout this period into July, the Division of Natural Resources receives numerous calls from concerned individuals who pick up fawns thinking they have been abandoned. In most cases, nothing could be farther from the truth.

West Virginia State Wildlife Center Celebrates 80th Anniversary June 20

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the West Virginia State Wildlife Center on June 20, 2003.

"The Wildlife Center, formerly known as the French Creek Game Farm, is an intricate part of the state's wildlife conservation and education program," according to Rob Silvester, Wildlife Center Biologist. Located in Upshur County, the Wildlife Center was established in 1923 as a wildlife refuge to aid in the reestablishment of wildlife populations in the state. Its value as a tourist attraction was quickly realized as many visitors came to the Wildlife Center in its first years of operation. Since that time, more than four million visitors have walked the interpretative trail, exploring their natural world and learning more about the state's wildlife resources.

WVDNR Fishery Biologists to Conduct Fisheries Surveys On Many Lakes and Rivers

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources fisheries biologists will be conducting surveys on many of the state's reservoirs, lakes, and rivers this spring. According to Bret Preston, Assistant Chief of Warmwater Fisheries, DNR biologists will be using electrofishing boats to collect largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass from the state's reservoirs and lakes to evaluate the size and condition of black bass, as well as the age structure. Individual fish will be measured and weighed and released back into the waters.
