“Many sportsmen and women reported seeing and
hearing more coyotes during the 2004-05 hunting and trapping season
than in previous years,” said Frank Jezioro , Director of the West
Virginia Division of Natural Resources. “Hunters and landowners have
expressed concern that increasing coyote numbers will be detrimental to
wildlife populations and result in significant predation losses to
livestock.”

On Sunday, January 25, 2004, Conservation Officers C. W. Young and T. L. White, along with Nicholas County Deputy Sheriff W. K. Shafer, raided an illegal cock fight on Route 82 near Birch River, West Virginia. During the course of the investigation 21 persons were cited for participating in an illegal cock fight and more arrests are pending.

Well over 800 visitors took part in the West Virginia State Wildlife Center’s 80th Anniversary celebration, held on June 20, 2003, according to Rob Silvester, Wildlife Center Biologist. The event included a free admission day and refreshments for visitors, a kids’ fishing derby at the trout pond and a reception for current and former employees of the Wildlife Center. “Everyone had a wonderful time. One of the most memorable experiences was listening to the stories and tales of former employees who worked at the Center,” said Silvester.
