DNR Wildlife Resources Section Files Legislative Rules for Review

The Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has filed legislative rule changes with the Secretary of State's office, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Division's Wildlife Resources Section. The proposed rules will be open for review and written comment until 4:30 p.m. on July 28, 2005 . The availability of the proposed rules will be advertised in the State Register . In addition, the proposed rules will be available for review at each DNR district office, the Elkins office and the Charleston office. Individuals interested in reviewing the proposed rules should contact the Wildlife Resources Section staff at these offices.

  The Division of Natural Resources cautions all West Virginia residents that the feeding of black bears is a violation of state law, as well as a misguided disservice to our state animal, according to Christopher Ryan, Black Bear Project Leader for the DNR Wildlife Resources Section.

Coyote Numbers Increasing in West Virginia

 “Many sportsmen and women reported seeing and hearing more coyotes during the 2004-05 hunting and trapping season than in previous years,” said Frank Jezioro , Director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. “Hunters and landowners have expressed concern that increasing coyote numbers will be detrimental to wildlife populations and result in significant predation losses to livestock.”

Meetings Scheduled to Solicit Public Comment on Hunting and Fishing License Restructuring Proposal

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has scheduled six public meetings across the state to provide hunters, anglers and trappers with an opportunity to review and comment upon the proposed hunting and fishing license restructuring plan. These meetings will be held from January 29 through February 3.

Conservation Officers Arrest 21 in Nicholas County Cock Fighting Raid

On Sunday, January 25, 2004, Conservation Officers C. W. Young and T. L. White, along with Nicholas County Deputy Sheriff W. K. Shafer, raided an illegal cock fight on Route 82 near Birch River, West Virginia. During the course of the investigation 21 persons were cited for participating in an illegal cock fight and more arrests are pending.

The fastest man with a gun who ever lived is coming to town. Bob Munden, who has held all 18 world records in speed shooting since 1960, will perform at the 2003 National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration September 27 and 28 at Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park near Weston in Lewis County.

West Virginia State Wildlife Center Enjoys A Successful 80th Anniversary Celebration

Well over 800 visitors took part in the West Virginia State Wildlife Center’s 80th Anniversary celebration, held on June 20, 2003, according to Rob Silvester, Wildlife Center Biologist. The event included a free admission day and refreshments for visitors, a kids’ fishing derby at the trout pond and a reception for current and former employees of the Wildlife Center. “Everyone had a wonderful time. One of the most memorable experiences was listening to the stories and tales of former employees who worked at the Center,” said Silvester.

WV Trophy Hunters Donate Two Robotic Deer to Division of Natural Resources Law Enforcement

Two robotic deer decoys, commonly referred to as “robo-deer,” were presented to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Section by the West Virginia Bowhunters Association during its June 14 meeting in South Charleston.
